Industry: Academic / Education
Platform: Microsoft SQL Server, ERDPlus
- Project Title:
End-to-End SQL Assignment & Data Warehouse Modeling for Coursework Submission
- Objective:
To complete and document a SQL-based academic assignment in Microsoft SQL Server, including database creation, table design, data insertion, query writing, and database diagramming. A second follow-up task involved creating a
data warehouse schema design using
ERDPlus based on the previously built operational database.
- Project Description:
The client required completion of a university SQL homework assignment structured into detailed steps. The deliverables included:
- a) Creating a new database (Homework)
- b) Designing and creating multiple tables (with correct keys and constraints)
Inserting sample records
- c) Running SQL SELECT queries to verify inserted data
- d) Writing advanced SQL queries for multi-table joins
- e) Creating a full database diagram
- f) Preparing a step-by-step documentation instead of a screen recording
After successful delivery, a
second assignment was provided to:
- a) Design a dimensional model (star schema) using ERDPlus
- b) Submit a step-by-step explanation of the dimensional modeling process
- Tools & Technologies Used:
- a) Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)
- b) com (for ER modeling)
- c) Google Docs (step-by-step documentation)
- d) Zoom/Google Meet (for client communication)
- e) SQL (DDL & DML)
- Key Features Implemented:
| Task |
Description |
| SQL Database Design |
Created all required tables with appropriate data types and constraints |
| Data Insertion |
Populated tables with realistic sample values for assignment evaluation |
| SQL Queries |
Wrote seven queries to retrieve all data and a complex JOIN query |
| Database Diagram |
Generated visual representation of table relationships within SSMS |
| Step-by-Step Guide |
Created detailed documentation of the workflow for the client |
| Data Warehouse Modeling |
Designed star schema on ERDPlus based on the operational database |
- Challenges & Resolutions:
| Challenge |
Resolution |
| Client initially requested a Zoom recording which wasn’t feasible |
Delivered a comprehensive step-by-step Google Doc with SQL script |
| No raw .csv or structured data files provided |
Reverse engineered table structure and data from provided image |
| Required creation of ERDPlus diagrams without prior experience on platform |
Self-learned ERDPlus tool and delivered dimensional model as per rubric |
| Limited budget for initial assignment ($50) |
Accepted and built trust, with promise of continued projects |
- Outcome & Benefits:
- a) Successfully delivered both assignments with high accuracy and within deadlines
- b) Provided client clarity through call discussions and transparent communication
- c) Enabled students to meet grading rubric requirements (SQL execution + ERD design)
- d) Opened path for potential long-term collaboration on academic and technical tasks
- Client Feedback (Summary):
“Thanks, my friend. I will continue coming back to you if the results are good and correct… I’ll leave a good rating review!”
